Poker is a card game where players place bets against each other based on the value of their hand. Players can use chips (made of plastic or ceramic) to make their bets, or they can use real money. The bets are placed in a central pot, and the player with the best hand wins the pot. Players can also choose to bluff by betting that they have a better hand than they actually do. Other players must either call the bluff or concede.

While countless variants of the game exist, all poker games involve placing bets on the outcome of a single deal of cards. Before the cards are dealt, one or more players must place forced bets, called antes or blind bets. Players then receive their cards, and bet in a series of rounds until the showdown occurs at the end of which the highest hand wins the pot.

The word poker is thought to have evolved from earlier vying games, including Primero (French, 17th – 18th centuries), Brag (English, American and French, late 18th – early 19th centuries), and Brelan (French, 18th century). These games were all played with five cards. Later, the game was modified to include a draw and stud poker.

The game is fast-paced and requires a lot of mental energy. It is also a very social game, as players will often chat amongst themselves or with other players at the table. A good poker player will be able to read the tells of other players, which is a set of unconscious habits that reveal information about their cards. These can include body language, facial expressions and gestures.
