Before the cards are dealt, each player must put an initial contribution into the pot, known as the ante. Then, the dealer deals each player a complete hand of five cards. Players must then make a decision to either fold or raise their bets if they wish to compete for the pot.
Raising is often the right strategy, even when your hand is strong enough to win by itself. However, you should be careful not to over-play your hand or scare off other players waiting for a better draw. For example, if you hold two deuces and a pair, it’s usually a good idea to raise, since this will help build the pot and price out the worse hands from your competition.
